"As the airplane found its cruising speed high over the
Alps shortly after departing Marco Polo Airport in Venice, Sara looked down at
the snow covered rocky peaks with added interest after spending hours at the
Archivo di Stato two days ago reading accounts of the lucrative trade routes between
Venice and Constantinople in the early 14th Century. The trade activity must have provided
substantial funds for the Emeriti Brotherhood, who always appeared to work through
third parties to protect their anonymity. It occurred to her that the
rugged landscape below might be the same place that harbored the small group of
Emeriti, who escaped Venice just two weeks prior to the outbreak of the Black
Death in 1347.
She was now on her way to meet again with Aaron Rockchild
at the Emeriti International Headquarters.
The map indicated that it was conveniently located across the street
from the Zürich Hauptbahnhof, where she would arrive by train after deplaning
at the Zürich Airport. Her earlier
skepticism about the Emeriti Brotherhood was gradually eroding after encountering
a trail of circumstantial evidence connecting events that appeared to be more
than just historical coincidences. In
addition to the new evidence, she noted frequent references to the Greek
letter, “φ.” ……………….."
