20: da Vinci Influences

Emeriti Collaborations with Leonardo da Vinci, 1488 CE

Di Vinci study of wing ribbing for flying machine, 1488 CE
The Emeriti cultivated relationships with the great artists and thinkers of their day.  One can witness the fruits of their frequent intellectual interchanges with Leonardo in his prolific production of sketches and inventions that served as a protocol for early applied architectural and industrial engineering practices. The delicate movable ribbing structure in his human flying machine sketches, mimic the motion of a bird in flight and stands as an example of bio-engineering derived from keen avian anatomy observations.

Emeriti BHI Folding Plaza Umbrella™ at HBC, Maine 2011 CE
Modern Emeriti practices still reflect early associations with Leonardo and can be seen in the recent installation of a hydraulically powered retractable BHI Folding Plaza Umbrella™ at Hiram Blake Camp on Cape Rosier, Maine.  The installation was commissioned in anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of the Camp's founding.  The event will be marked by Steel Band performances, sing alongs, and a special presentation by the HBC Festival Chorus and Orchestra performing excerpts from Verdi's Rigoletto and La Traviata, while floating on a raft off of the Weir Cove pier, framed by the early August full moon and animated by tidal phosphorescence.

The concept reflects a keen awareness of Chinese folding umbrella design and is a clear homage to Claes Oldenburg.
